| Avalon (2001) Polish (English) |
| "Avalon" is noted Japanese director Mamoru Oshii's first directorial effort since his 1995 classic "Ghost in the Shell." In the six years between directing credits, Oshii has been attached to many different projects in other respects: "Jin-Roh" (writing credit) for example, and more recently "Blood: The Last Vampire" (planner/producer). The film is set in the near future in Poland and is shot entirely in Polish. It features an illegal virtual reality war-game called Avalon that is a favorite of Poland's disillusioned youth. The protagonist is a young lady named Ash who has earned that status of a 'Class A' solo warrior who now dreams of reaching the 'Special Class A' level. She learns from an old teammate that another player from the past is now an "unreturned," meaning a player reduced to a permanently vegetated state by the game. It seems that a secret character in the game called a ghost who will lead those worthy enough into the realm of 'Special Class A', but for others, contacting the ghost will turn them into one of these "unreturned." Ash then decides to form a team so she can locate this ghost and thus reach the realm of 'Special Class A.'
Written by Kazunori Ito, co-writer of "Ghost in the Shell," "Avalon" can be a bit confusing with its unanswered questions, but its intriguing and intelligent story will statsify most viewers. In addition the film presents a visually astounding experience for the viewer, typical for an Oshii film. Although the trailers suggested an action-packed thriller, the film itself is much slower paced, with three main action sequences set inside the game. While the final 30 minutes of the films are pretty intense, many viewers may find the film's slower moments to be artistic but tedious, something that has produced a gap in appreciation for Oshii's films. The score is by Kenji Kawai, who worked with Oshii on "Ghost in the Shell," but more recently created the haunting music featured in Ring 1 and 2. The music utilizes some interesting opera and greatly complements the visual experience. The heroine Ash, is portrayed by Malgorzata Foremniak. Miramax owns the US distribution rights for Avalon. Neil Gaiman, creator of the English Dub script for "Princess Mononoke," is credited with the English translation.
The game world of Avalon is exactly the same as our own, but the players have enhanced abilities and various weapons. The film's opening minutes make stunning use of computer graphics, which depend upon digitally enhancing real life locations to provide a unique appearance, rather than producing a phony computer-generated world from scratch. There are also some outstanding death animations and a few enemy vehicles. The game world of Avalon has a semi-sepia tone to it, but when Ash enters the real world the visual style stays pretty much the same, moving a bit more into a black-and-white style, with certain objects being visualized in full color, allowing them to contrast and stand out more. While the European locations make for an ideal setting, some say that Oshii made his site choice to cut costs on a budget-heavy film which makes substantial use of special effects that were fine-tuned by Industrial Light and Magic. However, the director has claimed he chose Poland and Polish actors to go against the grain.
