Basic Newsreader Functionality
Both Agent and Free Agent are fully functional USENET clients that support all the basic functions:
subscribing to your favorite newsgroups, downloading headers & messages bodies, and reading & posting messages.
Threaded USENET Discussions
Agent does multi-level message threading, using both the subject and the message ID. The thread is represented as an outline with responses indented below the original posting. See a screen shot of Agent's user interface for more details.
Off-line Newsgroup Datastore
All USENET headers and messages are stored in an off-line database. This allows you to read and reply to messages without being connected to the Internet. Agent automatically maintains the size and integrity of this database in accordance with your preferences. In conjunction with Folders (described below), Agent's off-line database makes it easy to organize binaries and text messages.
Multi-part Binaries
Agent makes it easy to download binary files such as music, pictures, movies and program files. Many of these binaries are so large they are posted as multiple messages. It is common to see alt.binaries.multimedia files posted across 20 or more messages. Agent hides this complexity by representing the binary as a single posting and automatically combines the parts for you on download. Furthermore, you can easily launch the binary from within the Agent and view it with your favorite viewer.
yEnc Binary Encoding and Decoding
In Agent 1.91, we added support for yEnc, a new, encoding algorithm that creates smaller binary files. yEnc was developed by Juergen Helbing who is now a member of the Agent Beta Team.
Group Properties
The real power of Agent is your ability to customize the behavior of each newsgroup. Group properties give you complete control of how messages and binaries are posted, filtered, downloaded, named, stored, and pruned. For example, the way you interact with a binary newsgroup is much different from the way you interact with a text newsgroup. In the binary domain, you'll want to handle small files such as pictures differently from the way you handle large multimedia files.
Kill and Watch Lists
Kill lists allow you to ignore posts from certain authors or certain topics, making it much easier to avoid flame-wars and SPAM. Watch lists are the opposite. Agent will automatically download the messages by specified authors, specific topics, or specific threads.
Cross-Post Management
Agent automatically recognizes when the same message is posted in more than one newsgroup so you can avoid downloading and viewing the same message twice.
Import and Export to NEWSRC Files
Agent uses a custom internal database format. You can export Agent's database to and from the industry-standard newsrc format, allowing you to easily interact with other newsgroup utility programs.

Agent includes a fully integrated email client that enables you to process news and mail from a single program! Agent supports all the popular email features: address book, MIME attachments, message quoting, custom signatures, and spell checking. In addition, Agent's email supports the "Common User Interface Features" listed below -- making Agent one of the most powerful email programs for the Internet.
MAPI
Agent can post email using the MAPI protocol, allowing you to integrate with your corporate email system.
Threaded Email Messages
Agent is one of the only email programs that threads Internet mail discussions The thread is represented as an outline with responses indented below the original email. The result is an intuitive representation of ongoing email conversations.

One of Agent's greatest strengths is that our core features work the same for USENET and Email.
Internal Multi-Tasking
Agent and Free Agent perform internal multitasking, allowing you to do many online tasks at once. For example, you can browse messages in one newsgroup while retrieving headers for another, or download long messages while continuing to browse or launching binaries.
Configurable User Interface
Agent's User Interface is flexible and easy to configure. You have complete control of the layout, format, fonts, and colors of the group, message list, and message body panes. See a screen shot of Agent's user interface for more details.
Searching
Agent and Free Agent allow you to perform basic searching in message lists and message bodies. Only Agent provides a "Global Search" facility that permits searching across multiple newsgroups.
Sorting
Agent makes it easier for you to browse the list of messages in a newsgroup or folder by allowing you to sort them in date, subject, author, and size.
Filters and Custom Views
Filtering allows you to display a subset of the messages such as unread messages only, or only messages whose body has been downloaded. Furthermore, you can create you own custom views with filters that can contain complex boolean logic.
Folders
Create folders for any topics you want, then copy messages to them with a simple drag-and-drop interface. This lets you collect messages from many newsgroups into a single location, or to distribute information from a single newsgroup into many categories. You can also file email alongside newsgroup messages, allowing you to maintain complete records on a topic.
Customizable Toolbars
We designed Agent's default toolbar from user feedback. However, you can add, delete or rearrange the icons to suit your preference. Agent's toolbars are context-sensitive. In other words, there is a unique toolbar for each distinct interface component (e.g., group list, message list, message body, etc.)
Multi-Lingual Spell Checking
Agent's news and email spell checker supports English (US and International), French, German, Italian, and Spanish. One the biggest benefits of a fully integrated email and news client is a common dictionary with all the words and proper nouns that you've added. Our dictionaries are available on the Agent Download Page.
URL Detection
Agent automatically detects URLs and highlights them as links that you can launch by double-clicking.
Trashcan
Allows users to logically delete messages, newsgroups, and folders before they are permanently deleted. When users delete a message or group, the deleted item is placed in Agent's Trashcan. Items in the Trashcan are deleted permanently when the user empties the Trashcan.
