While this is definitely an S&M fantasy, it probably would appeal to many people who usually like more their erotica more vanilla--Cecilia is never really hurt, and the dream-within-a-dream structure emphasizes that all of her adventures are just fantasies. One is definitely meant to identify with the heroine more than with her abusers.
